the-spiegel-60609-leadWe live in a connected and interactive world. More than ever, our phones, tablets and computers are by our sides constantly. Each is synced to one another, and we can access people, documents and photos in an instant. Personally, I don’t know what I would do without Dropbox; I have heart palpitations just thinking about it. The sewing industry has made strides to keep up with the pace of technology, Megan Nielsen’s app being just one example, and I believe we have made another giant step forward with the release of a new sewing machine – the Spiegel 60609. Made by Spiegel, a retailer with long history of innovation, the machine has WIFI technology and using their Spiegel Social Sewing App (available for both iPhone and Android) it can connect to your cell phone and tablets so that you can view and share what you’re sewing in real time on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Periscope, etc. You know what that means? #sewingselfie

I was recently contacted by Spiegel’s to try their new machine. I’ve sewn on almost every brand of machine, and I’m open to try many more. Nothing wrong with taking a test drive. For my first project, I chose a difficult fabric – sequins. From start to finish, the machine was a trooper. No skipped stitches, no broken thread, no gnarly bobbin messes. My skirt turned out amazing, and I wore it to Thanksgiving dinner and will wear it throughout the holiday. I was so pleased with the machine that I decided to partner with Spiegel’s. I’m even giving away a sewing machine at the end of this post! That won’t be the last giveaway this year either.

So, want to learn more about the 60609? Want to win one for yourself? Read below!

OVERVIEW

The Spiegel 60609 is a computerized sewing machine that has more than 350 built in stitches and more available for download on iTunes and Google Play. On the front of the machine is a smart device holder, which is basically a rack where you can put your cell phone or tablet. Behind it is a long arm that grasps the device, called a Handy Hook, so that your phone or tablet is secure. On the side, there is a USB port where you can power your cell phone or tablet. And can I mention the design? White and gold – so chic!

Some other specifications that you may be interested in knowing (you can find the full list here):

  • LED Lit Sewing Area – paired with your machine’s Stitch Cam for maximum visibility.
  • Speed Control Slider – slide the lever on the front of the machine to set the sewing speed from slow to fast. When the foot pedal is used, the lever functions as a top speed limiter.
  • 7mm Stitch Width – stitches can be adjusted for a maximum stitch width of 7mm creating attractive satin and decorative stitches.
  • 5mm Stitch Length – stitches can be adjusted for a maximum stitch width of 5mm that can be used to hold difficult fabrics or appliques in place before the final stitch is applied.
  • Twin Needle Mode – good for denim and specialty projects.
  • Presser Foot Pressure Dial – the ability to adjust the pressure of your presser foot when sewing different weights of fabric
  • 7 buttonhole styles

Priced at $296.88, the Spiegel 60609 is affordable and opens up sewing to a wider audience. A lot of my students have asked where they can buy a quality machine that isn’t out of their budget. In the past, I told them that it wasn’t possible. You get what you pay for. Not anymore. The Spiegel team worked with Universal Instruments, whose engineers helped with the development of the Apple iPhone, to create a machine that was reasonably priced but also highly advanced. Unlike other sewing machines that are priced in the same price bracket, the 60609 has a metal frame rather than a plastic frame.

The machine comes standard with a host of presser feet – button fitting, overcasting, buttonhole, blind hem, zigzag, non-stick, open toe, zipper, and monogramming foot. Additionally, it comes with all the other de rigueur accessories – screwdriver, bobbins, needle pack, seam ripper, edge/quilting guide and spool cap. For my needs and for most of my students, this is more than enough to make beautiful garments and in my case, lingerie. For those students who need more, they usually have their own “higher-end” sewing machine and parts. Seriously, I am really excited that my students now have an awesome option that won’t break the bank. Woot woot!

There is only one review currently on the website, but I think it’s worth noting:
Super Cool Machine with Tons of Extras
By Rickie
You cannot beat this price point and the quality of this machine has to been seen to be believed. Take advantage of the built-in WiFi station and USB charging. Not to mention the free Sewing App that is great for everyone to learn to sew or learn more just about the machine. Try it and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.”

Spiegel has gifted me with one sewing machine, and throughout this year, I will be creating and sharing tutorials, both lingerie and not, all of which will include the Stitch Cam. Having the ability to show you exactly what I’m working on in real time will make it a lot easier for you to follow. That’s my goal.

I also want to call out that the Spiegel team has been so nice, accommodating and supportive. Customer service is very important to me and I think its indicative of the kind of company a business is. From the first email, I’ve been communicating with Richard Lowe, International Creative Director for the brand, and he has been so willing to help Madalynne with all its sewing needs so it (and I) can grow. Thanks Richard!

Additionally, Spiegel will become a sponsor of Bra Making with Madalynne by providing sewing machines for the class. Hands up in the air! All the more reason to attend, ahem…

Students will not only get to try out the machines, but they’ll also be uploading what they’re sewing the day of on Instagram with the hashtag #bramakingwithmadalynne and #spiegelsewing

SERVICE + AVAILABILITY

Okay, so you’re probably thinking about how you’ll service your machine since you didn’t buy it from a dealer. Almost all sewing dealers that I’ve dealt with are more than willing to tune up and service machines that weren’t bought from their store.

Right now, the 60609 can only be purchased at Walmart. It’s available both in-store and online, and if you order online and do a store pick up, Walmart can get it at any store. 500 Select Walmart stores will have the machine for Christmas, and it is expected to be in 1500 doors by February. By mid year, it will be available nationwide.
